VADS History

Veterinary Antimicrobial Decision Support (VADS) System History:

The Veterinary Antimicrobial Decision Support (VADS) System was conceptualized in 1997 through the efforts of Drs. Mike Apley and Virginia Fajt (Iowa State University), Cory Langston (Mississippi State University), and Jeff Wilcke (Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine). All of the primary participants are veterinarians and Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology (ACVCP).

Initial financial support of $197,000 for the period 1998 to 2001 was provided by the following organizations.

Academy of Veterinary Consultants
American Association of Bovine Practitioners
American Association of Swine Veterinarians
American Veterinary Medical Association
National Cattlemen's Beef Association
National Pork Producers Council
Iowa Beef Center

This preliminary work led to support from the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA/CVM) in the form of $1,244,914 over 5 years starting April 30, 2001. The VADS System collaborators gratefully acknowledge all of the support that has made development of this system possible.

The collaborators also wish to acknowledge the efforts of the many people who have contributed to the project.

Beth Monroe served as project secretary and administrative assistant at Iowa State University from May of 1999 through April of 2005. She was instrumental in all aspects of project administration as well as organizing and supervising student worker efforts on the database.

A special student worker who contributed 3 years to the project during her veterinary education was Dr. Sarah Bashaw. Sarah worked with Dr. Fajt to start and populate the VADS System database.

Other veterinary students that have worked on the system at ISU include (now or soon to be Drs.) Eireann Collins, Elizabeth Streeter, Mariane Kirkendall, Joe Sampson, and Pete Tjelta.
